Qualified Rigger & Signalperson Training
Ensuring Safety and Compliance in Crane Operations
Course Overview
Safe lifting operations are impossible without properly trained personnel. This comprehensive course is designed to qualify your workers for two of the most critical roles in crane operations: the Qualified Rigger and the Qualified Signalperson, as defined by OSHA standard 29 CFR 1926, Subpart CC.
Students will gain a thorough understanding of their responsibilities, the operational limitations of crane equipment, and the specific skills needed to ensure a safe work environment during any lifting or hoisting task. Our training, offered nationwide, combines classroom instruction with hands-on practical evaluations to ensure every student is competent and confident in their role.
When is a Qualified Rigger or Signalperson Needed?
According to OSHA regulations, a Qualified Rigger is required any time workers are:
Involved in the assembly or disassembly of a crane.
Engaged in hooking, unhooking, or guiding a load.
Making the initial connection of a load to a component or structure while within the fall zone.
A Qualified Signalperson is required whenever the point of operation is not in full view of the operator, the operator's view is obstructed, or site-specific safety concerns warrant it.
Qualification Requirements & Testing
To be deemed qualified, a Signalperson must demonstrate a thorough understanding of:
The types of signals used at the worksite (e.g., hand, voice, radio).
Crane operations and dynamics, including swinging, hoisting, lowering, and boom deflection.
All relevant OSHA qualification requirements.
Our qualification process includes:
A written exam covering all course topics.
An individual practical test (5-10 minutes per student) to demonstrate competency.
A passing score of 75% is required. A single retest is allowed for the written exam; failure to pass the retest requires retaking the entire course.
Advanced Certification Option
For clients who require a more intensive, nationally accredited certification, we also offer the 3-day NCCCO Certified Rigger course. Please call our McAllen office well in advance to discuss your needs and schedule this program.
