TEEX Defensive Flagging & Traffic Control Certification
Commanding the Work Zone with Safety and Authority
Course Overview
A flagger is the most visible and vital safety role in any temporary traffic control zone. This 8-hour course provides the official Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) certification required for individuals directing traffic in construction, maintenance, or utility work zones.
This program goes beyond basic flagging procedures, teaching the principles of "Defensive Flagging"—a vigilant and proactive mindset focused on anticipating hazards and protecting lives. Participants will learn to command the work zone, communicate effectively with motorists, and guide traffic safely past the work area, all in compliance with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD).
Who Should Attend?
This certification is mandatory for any individual who will be controlling traffic through a temporary work zone. This includes:
Road construction and maintenance crews
Utility workers
Municipal and public works employees
Any personnel responsible for maintaining a safe flow of traffic near a worksite.
Core Responsibilities of a Certified Flagger
This course is built around the three fundamental responsibilities of a professional flagger:
